| Pre-task preparations are essential for consecutive interpretation. In most cases, however, interpreters are left with a rather short time for preparation. Thus,it’s important to decide the scope of preparation and have a reusable and effective routine to prepare adequately. The thesis discusses the key points and strategies on the pre-task preparation for consecutive interpretation of industry-specific interviews by analyzing a case of the mock conference “How to Control Health Care Costs: Lessons from Abroad” with theories related to interpretation preparation. The thesis finds that the main problem triggers are a lack of understanding of the target language discourse system,a lack of familiarity with the terminology in the source language, and a lack of understanding of the mechanism in the industry, all of which caused problems such as mistranslation, loss of information, improper pauses, and self-correction.The proposed strategies for improving the interpretation preparation are to build a system of industry-related knowledge, accumulate industry-related terminology, practice before the conference, and archive reusable materials. The thesis also summarizes a preparation routine for consecutive interpretation of industry-related interviews. It is hoped that the thesis can be a reference for interpreters in their preparation for similar types of conferences. |
