In daily communicative activities,we can see a lot of disfluencies, let alone such official occasions as interpreting.Fluency has long been used by many scholars as one of the important indicators of interpretation quality. It will affect the output of the interpreters, the transmission of messages, and the feeling of audiences. What’s more, the research on disfluency in interpreting is mainly focused on the field of simultaneous interpretation, and there are few cases of Chinese-English interpretation in the few cases of consecutive interpretation. While, using fluency theory to analyze the case of consecutive interpreting can make up for its shortcomings, provide a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of interpreting and enrich the existing research on disfluency in interpretation. Therefore, the study about disfluencies in interpreting is necessary. The corpus for this report is taken from the author’s practice of interpreting an online lecture on the topic of “The Wine Industry and Tourism in China” in July 2021.The author briefly describes the whole process of this interpreting including pre-task preparation, onsite interpreting, and post-task summary. The author refers to a lot of previous research and studies on disfluency in the field of interpreting.Based on the research of disfluency and in conjunction with recordings and transcription, disfluencies of the author’s interpreting can be categorized into four classifications: unfilled pauses, filled pauses, repeats, and selfrepairs. The author examples some classifications under each categorization and the main reasons for disfluencies in this interpretation are as follow: overly nervous state of mind;insufficient background knowledge;bad language habits;poor expression of the target language;inadequate sentence recognition ability;improper note-taking.After finding out these six reasons, the author proposes corresponding coping strategies: increasing stress training;accumulating background knowledge;strengthening the self-monitoring and immediate assessment of the translation language;strengthening listening and logical training;improving language expression ability;strengthening the note-taking training.Through this analysis and practice, the author hopes to improve her interpreting performances and provide references for interpreting trainees in avoiding unnecessary disfluencies in interpreting. What’s more, the author would like to make a small contribution to the research on fluency.
