A Report On The C-E Translation Of "SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine (CHO Cell) Clinical Trial Interim Analysis Report" From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

Taking Nida’s functional equivalence theory as the theoretical framework,this report probes into effective Chinese-English translation techniques and methods regarding medical texts by analyzing typical translation cases from the clinical trial interim analysis report of a domestic SARS-CoV-2 vaccine,aiming to provide reference for the C-E translation of similar clinical trial texts.From the perspective of functional equivalence theory,translators can achieve functional equivalence and seek similar reactions from both source text readers and target text readers from the following three aspects.At the lexical level,translators should be clear about the specific meaning of a word in combination with its context,and conduct intensive and meticulous verification before finalizing the translation of a term.At the syntactic level,division,restructuring,shift of voice and nominalization are effective solutions.Division is suitable for dealing with long sentences.Restructuring the sentence helps to adjust its semantic focus.Shift of voice conduces to the objectivity of such scientific and technical texts and highlights key information.Application of nominalization accords with characteristics of scientific and technical texts since it helps to convey prodigious amounts of information with concise words.At the textual level,grammatical or lexical cohesive devices can be employed to make the translated text an interconnected and unified whole,rather than a simple pile of sentences.This report may enrich studies on clinical trial report translation.Besides,appropriate translation in a professional sense can better facilitate the exchanges between Chinese and foreign scholars in the field of medicine,and promote the development of new drugs.
