With the rapid scientific advances, media development and global exchanges, simultaneous interpretation for live TV programs has become more and more popular.Since its advent in the Iraqi war of2003in Chinese mainland, SI for TV has beencovering nearly all types of programs like ceremonies, interviews, sports events andnews release conferences. In recent years, the Olympic Games have made sportsevents unprecedentedly popular in China, which calls for more sports interpreting. However, the differences between TV interpreting and other interpreting formsmake the former a more difficult task to handle since interpreters are always facedwith more pressure from limited time and technology as well as imperfectenvironment. As a result, they need variation strategies to efficiently fulfill theinterpreting tasks and theoretical guidance to complement the interpreting studies. It is not until the late1990s that the concept of translation variation has beendeveloped into a systematic translation theory by Huang Zhonglian. As translationvariation is now gradually receiving more and more attention from translators andrelated scholars, it has been widely applied in the research of translation studies. Onthe other hand, it has also provided a brand new perspective for interpreting studies. In this thesis, the author conducts a qualitative research of simultaneous interpretingfor TV sports interviews from Huang’s Translation Variation Theory. By using thistheory, the author analyzes the reasons, strategies and effects of interpreting variationsand tries to figure out the proper variation methods in simultaneous TV interpreting ofsports interviews.
