The E-C Translation Of Figures Of Speech In The Autobiographical Texts

Chapters 4 and 5 of Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams,Mistakes and Growing up constitute the foundation for this translation report.The source text is excerpted from the autobiography.According to Peter Newmark’s theory of Language Functions,due to the text’s literary tendency,it features both expressive function and informative function,which in the source text is mainly represented by various figures of speech.Thus,how to translate them while maintaining the original language style becomes the core problem.Accordingly,this report focuses on two parts: phonological rhetoric figures and lexical stylistic devices,which are further subdivided and analyzed.As for the former,in this report,the writer discusses the translation of alliteration,rhyme,and onomatopoeia;the writer breaks down the analysis of the latter into the translation of simile,metonymy,synecdoche,hyperbole,irony,and pun.Furthermore,the report talks about whether and how to reproduce the figures of speech of the source text and summarizes some translation methods and techniques based on several typical cases.In brief,free translation and idiomatic translation,as well as shift and other translation techniques are recommended to be adopted to tackle phonological rhetorical figures.For lexical stylistic devices,the literal translation method,coupled with addition and shift techniques,can be utilized for the translation.Based on this translation practice,this report aims to cement the writer’s knowledge and understanding of both English and Chinese figures of speech and the translation of them,with a summary of recommended translation methods and techniques as a result.Hopefully,it can provide a reference for the practice of other autobiographical texts.
