The use of phonological rhetorical devices in Chinese diplomatic discourse refers to a unique linguistic phenomenon in diplomatic contexts, with repeated syllables, harmonious tones and symmetrical structures generated from Chinese word-formation grammar and phonetic features. As an important component of diplomatic language art with Chinese characteristics, diplomatic phonological expressions embody the traditional Chinese cultural traits and play a unique role in delivering diplomatic ideas and policies. So far,the academic research on diplomatic discourse translation has mainly centered on the translation principles of diplomatic discourse and the translation of diplomatic terms, with only a few studies focused on the translation of rhetorical phenomena in diplomatic contexts. Moreover, compared with the phonological rhetorical studies in poetry and other literary fields, the phonological phenomenon in diplomatic discourse is often neglected by relevant scholars due to the particularity and complexity of diplomatic contexts. As a unique linguistic phenomenon, diplomatic phonological rhetorical devices enjoy aesthetic, communicational and emotional values, which can enhance the expressive force and emotive power of diplomatic discourse. As a result, under the guidance of translation aesthetics, this thesis makes a comprehensive analysis of the aesthetic subject and the main types, stylistic characteristics, and discursive functions of the aesthetic object in the process of Chinese diplomatic phonological rhetorical translation based on the classic diplomatic translation cases from the interdisciplinary perspective of diplomacy, translation studies, and phonology. The thesis proposes the compound translation principle of“Political Equivalence plus Prosodic Re-presentation”(PEPR)for diplomatic phonological expressions and the corresponding translation methods.Needless to say, there are similarities and differences between Chinese and English phonological rhetorical devices. Therefore,to reproduce the phonological beauty of Chinese diplomatic phonological phenomenon,it is feasible to adopt a translation strategy of substitution or compensation, namely alliteration-based,rhyme-based,assonancebased,and prosodized translation methods. The thesis argues that as the dual subjects of political translation and aesthetic practice, diplomatic translators are expected to convey the basic political connotation of diplomatic phonological expressions at the diplomatic level first and pay attention to the aesthetic value and emotional meaning of the translated versions at the linguistic level,so as to reinforce their attention value and memory value at the communicational level.By utilizing translation aesthetics to explore the translation of Chinese diplomatic phonological rhetorical devices, the thesis is conducive to the expansion of range of language categories of phonological application, and is of great practical significance to the communication of Chinese diplomatic discourse and the improvement of China’s international discourse power against the background of “telling China’s stories well and having China’s voice heard”. |
