The source text of this translation practice report is selected from chapters 1 to 2of the adventure novel Tales of Lonely Trails by Zane Gray,an American western novelist. The translation practice report is written based on the translation process, mainly combining the characteristics of the text itself, analyzing and summarizing the problems encountered in the translation process. The report will focus on the problems encountered in the translation process and explore the translation methods and techniques to solve the problems. This text is an adventure novel, and the author Zane Gray personally visited the primitive areas of the western United States, exploring the local primitive and wild natural life, based on which,he created literary works according to the real social history of the United States. In the selected text,in addition to the engaging plot, there are also a large number of descriptions of scenery and characters. As a whole, the text is rich in connotation, complex in structure, logical and coherent. Therefore, the main problem encountered in the translation process is how to represent its coherence in the Chinese translation,in the hope of retaining the basic information and the deeper connotation of the text, while reproducing the characteristics of the source language at the same time. With the help of relevant translation theories on coherence, the source text is translated and analyzed from two levels: semantic coherence and pragmatic coherence, and the practice report explores how to achieve the effect of the source text,so that the translation can be of quality.A number of representative translation cases are selected for analysis, and the method of reconstructing the coherence of the translation is summarized accordingly.During this translation practice and the writing of this report,a better understanding and knowledge of the characteristics of this adventure novel and the problems of reconstructing the Chinese translation of coherence is gained. The problems, their solution, and the translator’s self-reflection is recorded, and hopefully the translation has achieved coherence and smoothness, able to provide reference for later translation practice and research of this type of text. |
