The "Cthulhu Mythos" novel series are the works of Howard Phillips Lovecraft,an American writer of horror novels in the 20 th century.In an era where murder cases were the main theme of horror literature,its vast worldview and self examination of humanity were unique among numerous works.With the successive publication of the "Cthulhu Mythos" novel series in China and the growing development of network communication technology,the relevant research results have gradually increased.Through the study of the horror elements in the "Cthulhu Mythos" novel series,this paper expounds the uniqueness of the horror elements used by Lovecraft,explores the exquisite techniques used by Lovecraft to create horror,reveals the aesthetic value of the horror elements in the "Cthulhu Mythos" novel series,and hopes to provide ideas for the creation of horror literature.The introduction clarifies the research significance of this paper,combs the research situation of "Cthulhu Mythos" novel series at home and abroad,and expounds the research methods of this paper.The text is mainly divided into three parts: The first part analyzes the typical horror elements in the "Cthulhu Mythos" novel series.By analyzing the terrifying monster images,mysterious cosmic scenes,and human death and alienation,this article explains the uniqueness of the monster images in the novel,elucidates the essence of the cosmic scenes in the novel,and discusses the horror generated by death and alienation in form and cognition.The second part analyzes the artistic techniques used to express horror elements in the work..Taking Big Gun and horror in the Pottery Statue as examples,this paper analyzes the application of first person narrative perspective in the works.Taking "The Meaning of Red Light" and "The Rat in the Wall" as examples to analyze physiological fear and psychological fear,highlighting the role of psychological description in expressing fear and horror elements.This paper takes the defamiliarization effect created by Lovecraft’s use of adjectives and the blank in the narrative of his novels as examples to analyze the tension in the language of his novels.The third part analyzes the aesthetic value of the horror elements in the "Cthulhu Mythos" novel series.The experience of life extinction in works can meet the needs of readers’ aesthetic experience and emotional release,enriching human emotional experience.Lovecraft’s imagination of various spaces deepens the reader’s aesthetic experience gained through fear.The subversion of human subjectivity highlights the insignificance of humanity,exacerbates readers’ sense of horror,and sublimates their sense of fear.The Gothic aesthetics and tragic shock reflected in the work bring joy to people.The conclusion summarizes the main contents and viewpoints of the paper,and clarifies its uniqueness by studying the typical elements that constitute "horror",the artistic techniques for expressing horror elements,and the aesthetic value of horror elements in the "Cthulhu Mythos" novel series,in order to provide a new understanding of the study of the "Cthulhu Mythos" novel series.
