Research On Cosmicism In Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos

Cthulhu Mythos have become a prominent phenomenon in popular culture,but there are still few Chinese researches related to it.This article takes Cosmicism as the main research object,which is shown in Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos,and takes the theory of the Other in modern philosophy and psychology as the main research theory.Combined with space theory,modernity theory and posthuman theory,this article discusses the ontology,form,generation and value of Cosmicism.There are four chapters in this article:The first chapter mainly discusses the ontology of Cosmicism,which means,what is the essence of Cosmicism.In terms of cognition,morality and desire,Cthulhu monsters are beyond the control of the subject and constitute the absolute Other.The essence of Cosmicism actually lies in the fear of the other who is beyond the power of the subject.The other is always in obscurity.The otherness brought by obscurity makes the subject lose its own power.The obscurity of the other and the loss of the subject ’s power are the essence of Cosmicism.The second chapter analyzes the interaction between the subject and the other in each space from the spatial form of Cosmicism.Lovecraft created the heterogeneous material space,body space and dream space,which actually broke the subject’s original cognition of space and formed a kind of other-self co-existence space.It subverts the original space production relations and gives the subject a strange feeling of uncertainty.The third chapter mainly discusses the causes of Cosmicism from the life experience and background of Lovecraft.In the 20 th century,the development of modernity shows the power of division.Science,morality and aesthetics are all on the scale of being revalued.Modernity and its consequences make Lovecraft extremely sensitive to the others and otherness.Lovecraft’s acceptance and resistance to modernity is the biggest reason for Cosmicism.The fourth chapter mainly discusses the value of Lovecraft’s unique Cosmicism,Through the special mechanism of Cosmicism,Lovecraft reflected on modernity,created a new paradigm of horror,indicated a new relationship between self and other and a new kind of subject in the post human era.Generally speaking,Cosmicism shows the cultural dilemma and conflict of a specific era,puts human beings in the vast universe,introduces the perspective of science and technology into wired fiction,and reflects the dominant position of human center,which has unique aesthetic value and internal meaning.
