| This report is based on the translation project of the historical book Bankers and Empire,which was entrusted by Beijing Qianqiu Zhiye Book Distribution Co.,Ltd.and translated by the supervisor and the present author.Chapter five “American Expansion” is selected as the source text.On the issue of translation loss,translation compensation is taken as a guiding theory with its relevant means to analyze and compensate for the historical informative text,which lays a solid foundation of this practice report.This report studies the source text and its narrative features,analyzes translated cases,and summarizes the specific compensatory means from linguistic,cultural,and aesthetic levels to compensate for the translation loss in historical texts.At the linguistic level,the translator conducts a detailed study on lexical,syntactic and discourse compensation means.In terms of the lexis,amplification,specification and extension can be adopted to compensate for the semantic loss;with respect to syntax,merging,shift of perspective and division can be employed to compensate for the formal loss;and as for the discourse,logical relations can be added to compensate for the structural loss.At the cultural level,the translator adopts annotation with brackets and interpretive translation inside the text and footnote outside the text as auxiliary means to compensate for the loss of clarity and integrity.At the aesthetic level,domestication can be served to compensate for the loss of aesthetic values,while fourcharacter words and repetition can be used to compensate for rhetorical devices so as to improve the readability of the translation.This report aims to provide references for the translation loss of historical informative texts from the perspective of translation compensation,expecting to complete the authenticity,improve the readability and enhance the literariness. |
