Biography is an important part of literature and one of the main ways for people to understand foreign cultures.Translating foreign biographies into Chinese can help Chinese readers understand the socio-political,economic and cultural background of foreign countries, and serves as a bridge of cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries. This is a report based on the English-Chinese translation practice, the source text of which is selected from the biography Mademoiselle: Coco Chanel and the Pulse of History written by Rhonda K.Garelick.Due to the cultural differences between China and foreign countries, translation loss is inevitable, and the biography is both literary and documentary in nature,so the translation compensation is urgently needed. In this report, selected parts are translated to explore the use of translation compensation in English-Chinese translation of biographical literary texts.Based on the linguistic features of the selected texts, the translator of this report adopts a case study approach to explore the use of translation compensation in the Chinese translation of biographical literary texts from three levels:the cultural, communicative and grammatical levels.Through this translation practice, the translator of this report reviews the research results of scholars at home and abroad on translation compensation and analyzes the texts by applying translation compensation strategies and different compensation techniques with specific cases. This report concludes that by accurately grasping the translation compensation theory and choosing appropriate compensation strategies according to the features of biographical texts,it can compensate for the problem of information inequality between two different languages and balance the source language, the translated language and the target language. At the same time, through appropriate compensation means, the emotional sentiment of the source text can be truly restored,so that readers of the target language can better understand the western culture. In addition,it is hoped that this report can provide some reference for domestic biography translation. This translation practice is conducive to promoting cultural exchange and communication at home and abroad,as well as broadening the perspective of theoretical research, enhancing people’s understanding of biographical literature, and enriching the theoretical and practical application of translation of biographical texts.
