This report is based on the English-Chinese translation practice of the biography James Hogg: A Life. The selected chapters for the report introduce James Hogg’s life experience, identity transformation, significant works, and interpersonal communication. The report takes Katharina Reiss’ s Text Typology Theory as the framework, studies the main text types in James Hogg: A Life, and uses the recommended methods to handle the English-Chinese practice. The report aims to overcome language and cultural barriers, convey the source text’s accurate meaning and enhance the quality of the target text.Firstly, the accuracy of vocabulary determines the accuracy of informative text. The employment of four translation techniques can transfer concise and hypotaxis-centered English into plain Chinese and convey the accurate meaning of the source text, namely the embodiment of pronouns, meaning specification, addition of category words, and part of speech conversion.Secondly, the application of combination, division, shift at the cultural level, and calque in the expressive text can handle the translation of long and complex sentences and literary works, transmitting the aesthetic and artist form and ensuring the accuracy of information.Based on the English-Chinese translation practice under the guidance of the Text Typology Theory, the report focuses on the problems that occurred during the translation process of the biographical text James Hogg: A Life. The report has offered suitable translation strategies by comparing the initial translation with the fitted version and summarized nine categories of text in biographical texts that can be directly classified into specific types. The report will provide a reference for the following research in related fields.
