| Lots of substances in life are inflammable which need material modification and fill in suitable flame retardant to inhibit combustion.Although considerable achievements have been made by domestic researchers in the field of flame retardant,developed countries in Europe and the US initiated earlier in this field and their technology is relatively more mature.Therefore,it is still of great value to the research and translation of such relevant English literatures in the field.The report is based on the author’s E-C translation practice of the research paper Fire Retardant Fillers for Polymers,achieved by Roger Rothon and Peter Hornsby.In translation,the Functional Equivalence Theory proposed by Nida is used to achieve functional equivalence between the target text and the source text,from meaning to style,so that the Chinese readers can receive the same information as the English readers.The report discusses from three aspects: lexical equivalence,syntactic equivalence and textual equivalence,and mainly summarizes and analyzes translation difficulties encountered in translation practice.Content words and function words are discussed at lexical level,complex single sentences and clauses are discussed at syntactic level,and the textual level is analyzed from the perspective of cohesion and coherence.The process of translation contains word selection,sentence formation,and text organization,from lexical equivalence to textual equivalence,ultimately to achieve functional equivalence between target text and source text at all levels.The whole process of translation is carried out and improved under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory,so that the translation can reproduce the information of the source language in terms of meaning and style.Through the translating practice,the author has deepened the cognition of the translating process and Functional Equivalence Theory.At the same time,it helps the author improve translation skills,expand knowledge horizon,increase experiences for future translation in this field,and also provide some references for the translation of relevant literatures in flame retardant field. |
