| As a rare “eccentric” painter in the history of Netherlandish painting,Hieronymus Bosch is recognized as one of the inspirations for surrealism in the 20 th century.Bosch’s works transform the dark side that exists in people’s minds into tangible entities that can be directly perceived, and this is precisely what he excels at using in his creations, namely “metaphor”.This paper aims to explore the “metaphorical” characteristics of Netherlandish painter Bosch’s works.Firstly,by combining Bosch’s creative characteristics with the phenomenon of “cultural metaphor” in the Netherland in his time, this paper analyzes the “metaphorical” characteristics of Hieronymus Bosch’s artistic creation and its influence on the artistic creation of later generations including 20 th century surrealist painting, through a detailed examination of his works and relevant literature.Subsequently, this paper selects classic oil paintings by Hieronymus Bosch for deeper interpretation, using examples of “metaphorical” features found within them to reveal their unique artistic language and symbolic meanings conveyed by these symbols while exploring their underlying implications. Finally, based on the previous research, this paper illustrates the inspiration of the “metaphorical” features in Hieronymus Bosch’s works to my own printmaking by combining Bosch’s metaphorical painting language with my own creative practice. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of Bosch’s artworks and an in-depth study of the “metaphorical” character of these works, which not only helps to better understand Bosch’s artistic style and themes, but also provides an important reference for the understanding of Netherlandish Renaissance art.In addition, the comprehensive and in-depth research framework provided by this paper also points the way to future artistic creation. |
