After the Tang dynasty, scholars had only a vague understanding of the characteristics of Jia Gongyan’s Yilishu(《仪礼疏》).This paper examines the characteristics of Jia Gongyan’s Yi Li Shu by analysing the textual hierarchy through the different views in the Yi Li Shu,to speculate on the sources of the different statements.Chapter 1,"The Base Text and the Selection of Different Views in Yilishu",speculates that Jia Gongyan’s edited text is characterized by the fact that Jia first selects one of Huang Qing’s texts and Li Mengzhen’s text as the base text for editing. If there were other views and texts that Jia Gongyan approved of,he edited them into the base text.If the two texts have different points of view, while Jia Gongyan’s editing of the underlying text was negligent, this would lead to the existence of multiple textual levels and different statements in the Yilishu.Chapter 2,"References to Huang Kan’s Sayings in the Yilishu",argues that some of the sayings in the Rites of Passage are again similar to those of Huang Kan.Chapter 3,"The Unification of Southern and Northern Studies and The Scholarly Tradition of Tang Dynasty Commentaries",reflects on the use of the concept of"Southern Studies"and"Northern Studies"as a model of explanation and on the use of external factors as a criterion of judgement. The choices made by Northern scholars in the early Tang dynasty with regard to the choice of foundational texts, references to sayings, etc.,were not choices made in a consciousness of the antagonism between Southern and Northern learning.
