A Comparative Study Of Two English Versions Of Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen From The Perspective Of Communication Studies

This thesis studies the English translation of classics of traditional Chinese medicine from the perspective of communication studies on the basis of the following two reasons:(1)Translation is identical to communication in essence.That is to say,information exchanges are realized through the use of symbols in the process of translating or communicating.Since two languages are involved,translation is a kind of special communication.Communication studies can provide more research perspectives for the English translation of classics of traditional Chinese medicine and deepen the comprehensive study of classics of traditional Chinese medicine;(2)By analyzing various elements in communication process,communication studies summarizes the laws and strives to maximize the communication effect.The thesis studies how the elements influence the translation of classics of traditional Chinese medicine and strives to enlarge its communication effect.Under the guidance of "5W" model,the thesis has compared Ni Maoxing's version and Paul Ulrich Unschuld's version of Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen in the aspects of communicator(translator),communication content(translation),communication audience(readers),communication media(publishing house)and effects and results are as follows:(1)The translator as the communicator needs to have a good command of ancient Chinese and grasp medical knowledge as well as distinguish the most authoritative master copy;it is recommended that Chinese translators should collaborate with foreign scholars;(2)In order to deepen readers'understanding of the original text,introduction to the text and notes on the translation can be added;translators can adopt literal translation,free translation,transliteration plus explanation,explanatory translation,borrowing terminology and the original text is rendered into fluent and authentic English,which is readable to foreign readers;(3)According to historical background,the translator confirms target readers' needs,on the basis of which versions are produced;(4)Scholars can translate and do researches on it at the same time and deliver research outcomes to the mass media like journals and collected papers to promote the translation's popularity;domestic publishing institutes can collaborate with influential overseas publishing institutes to promote its distribution and publicity.It is hoped that the research on the English translation of Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen from the perspective of communication studies can offer some constructive advice on the translation of classics of traditional Chinese medicine and deepen the comprehensive study of the translation of Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen.
