Abstract/Summary:
Depression,as a common emotional problem in adolescents,adversely affects the physical and mental development of adolescents,causes damage to social functions,and even threatens the life safety of individuals in severe cases.Chinese Left-behind adolesecents,as a "special" group arising from the development of modernization in China,are at increased risk of developing emotional adjustment problems,due to low levels of family functioning caused by the destruction of the nuclear family structure and long-term separation of parent and child.Research shows that left-behind adolescents’ family functions are hindered,mainly in the alienation of parent-child relationship,lack of emotional support,lack of educational guidance,and lack of behavior supervision and management.Although a large number of studies have demonstrated the negative impact of adverse family risk factors on left-behind adolescents’ emotional adaptation,Few studies have explored the mechanism between family factors and left-behind a dolescents’ depression from a systematic and integrated family perspective.Therefore,there are fewer studies on the influence mechanism of family function,which reflects the operating status of the family system,on the depression of left-behind adolescents.This study explored the role of family function on depression(mood)in left-behind adolescentsAlthough low levels of family functioning are considered to be an important stressor affecting adolescents’ mental health,whether impaired family functioning produces depression,an emotional adaptation issue,is closely related to in dividual characteristics,availability of social support,and individual coping styles.Based on the Diathesis-stress theories of deoression and Social support theories,this study introduces self-concept as an individual cognitive characteristic factor and peer relationship as an important social support resource for adolescents and explores the role of self-concept and peer relationships in depression levels of left-behind adolescents,hoped that it will provide a reference for the prevention and intervention of depression in left-behind adolescents and a basis for carrying out targeted mental health education for left-behind youth and improving their positive psychological quality.The study is divided into two parts.In the first part,a questionnaire survey was conducted among 650 junior and senior high school students in Yibin,China by using the Family Assessment Device.Scale and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale,to explore the current level of depression mood and family functioning between left-behind and non-left-behind adolescents among adolescents in the investigated area.Based on this,the impact of family function on depression of left-behind adolescents was further investigated.In the second part,using the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale and the Adolescent Peer Relationship Scale,a questionnaire survey was conducted on 386 adolescents who met the definition of left-behind adolescents in the first part,the differences of left-behind adolescents’ family function,self-concept,peer relationship and depression in left-behind characteristics were further investigated,and the mediating effect of self-concept and the moderating role of peer relationship were explored.The results of the study are as follows:(1)The surveyed adolescents have a high prevalence of depression,and a large proportion of adolescents are troubled by depression.There is no significant difference in depression among adolescents whether left-behind or not,but there is a significant difference in family function.The level of family function of left-behind adolescents is significantly lower than that of non-left-behind adolescents.There are significant differences in depression among left-behind adole scents in terms of gender and physical health;there are significant differences in the family function of left-behind adolescents in terms of only child and physical health.(2)The left-behind adolescents’ family function,self-concept,peer relations hip,and depression were found to have significant differences in the left-behind characteristic of parent-child contact frequency.(3)Family function significantly affects the level of depression among left-behind adolescents;The study found that Self-concept has a partial mediating effect between family function and left-behind adolescents’ depression,that is,family function can directly affect left-behind adolescents’ depression,and can also indirectly affect left-behind adolescents’ depression levels by affecting the development of left-behind adolescents’ self-concept;The peer inferiority fear in peer relationship has a significant positive moderating effect on the relationship between family function and left-behind adolescents’ depression that is,the positive relationship between family functioning and the depression among left-behind adolescents is strengthened under high peer fear of inferiority...
