Strategies For ICT Texts E-C Translation From The Perspective Of Cohesion Theory

Under normal conditions,the components that make up the language level of a text show a certain degree of cohesion to help the text better achieve meaning coherence.For this reason,cohesion can be seen as a necessary internal condition for achieving coherence.However,the great difference between English and Chinese is caused by diverse cultural backgrounds,which accordingly brings challenges to text translation.As a result,how to truly achieve equal coherence between the translated text and the source text in translation has become a practical problem worthy of consideration and urgent solution for translators.At this point,cohesion theory provides clear practical direction and reliable theoretical basis for this report,and plays a key role in guiding English-Chinese translation.English ICT texts are characterized by clear logic,concise expression,professional vocabulary and rigorous structure.Therefore,in order to achieve a coherent translation and enable the Chinese readers to understand the meaning of the original text to the greatest extent,the awareness of cohesion translators matters a lot in the process of translating from English to Chinese.Based on the translation practice text Step into the Metaverse,and combined with the cohesion theory put forward by Halliday and Hasan,along with the interpretation and development of the cohesion theory provided by Zhang Delu and other Chinese scholars,this report intends to analyze the typical cohesion devices in the original text.This report focuses on cohesion devices like substitution,conjunction,collocation,reiteration and modulation from the three levels of vocabulary,grammar and discourse,and processes them in accordance with the language register and cohesion characteristics in Chinese text: when being translated from English to Chinese,substitution in the original text is omitted,amplified or conversed in Chinese translation;Conjunctive elements is reserved or reduced;Collocation retains the habitual usage meaning or adds the innovative usage meaning;Reiteration is completely reserved,partially transformed or moderately simplified;And modulation is embodied through the readjustment of word order,the omission of redundancy and the supplement of implication.Simultaneously,it is found in the report that in the process of translating cohesive devices and language meaning in the original text,translators should take different cohesive devices and linguistic characteristics between English and Chinese into consideration,and select translation strategies that are compatible with the textual structure and meaning of the original text,and applies translation methods that is of pertinency and reference value as diversified as possible,such as omission,repetition,restituting,amplification,literal translation,free translation,conversing,etc.On all accounts,this translation practice report aims to provide some references for similar theoretical research and practical operation of text cohesion and coherence in the future.
