A Practice Report On The English-Chinese Translation Under Newmark’s Correlative Translation

La Roja written by Jimmy Burns,a best-selling author,is a great book about Spanish football.The book offers readers a new perspective on the history of Spanish football and the rise of Spanish football in the 21 st century.The purpose of this translation practice is to help Chinese football fans learn more about Spanish football,and to provide its experience for the development of Chinese football.As the most popular sport in the world,football has been popular in Europe and South America for decades.More and more countries regard the popularization of football as a bridge to exchange with others.However,translation studies about football texts are very scarce.Therefore,the translation practice on La Roja becomes a tremendous need.The translated text can be classified into an informative text,emphasizing the accuracy and authenticity of the content.Peter Newmark is an English translation theorist and educator.He put forward the concept of "communicative translation" and "semantic translation" in his Approaches to Translation,and then developed it into the correlative translation afterwards,which unified the original theories.He thought that expressive texts should be translated under the guidance of semantic translation and imperative texts the guidance of communicative translation,while informative texts need the flexible use of both semantic translation and communicative translation according to different purposes.The correlative translation is a new approach proposed by Newmark based on his previous studies.In addition,Newmark’s previous translation theory is based on European languages,while the correlative translation takes the essence of translation between different groups of language into account.The author chooses the correlative translation proposed by Newmark as the guidance during the translation,and uses five methods(synonymy,cultural equivalent,paraphrase,component analysis and modulation)to analyze the specific cases in the translated text,which also reflects that the correlative translation works as a guide in translating informative texts.This translation practice report is divided into five chapters.Chapter One gives a brief overview of the research background,general situation and significance of the translation project.Chapter Two reviews the researches of the correlative translation at home and abroad,the study on the progresses of informative text and sports text translation.Chapter Three describes the process of translation,including the preparation before translation,the process of translation,the summary of problems and solutions,and the completion of post translation revision and proofreading.Chapter Four introduces the background and language features of the original text,and then makes a detailed case analysis combined with theory.Chapter Five concludes the significance of this translation practice and points out the shortcomings.
