This is a report on the translation of Virtual Reality authored by Samuel Greengard,of which Chapter Three and Four, that is,The Technology behind the Reality and Extended Reality Gets Real, are the source text.In COVID-19 pandemic, great contributions have been made by the extended reality(XR)and there is a growing interest in the development of this technology. However, extended reality is a foreign concept, which means the source language of the materials involved is not Chinese,so the text about virtual reality should be translated. In the source text,Chapter 3 attaches attention to the operation of AR and hardware facilities, the key to realize virtual reality and basic information of MR.Chapter 4 introduces the technology behind XR as well as the importance of mimetic feeling and human-machine interaction. The source text belongs to English for science and technology writings, featuring terminologies, nominalization, complex sentences, passive voices,etc..Therefore,the translator adopts communicative translation theory of Peter Newmark in practice in order to make the target text easily understood by target readers.Under the guidance of this theory, the translator uses voice converting, division, restructuring and other methods to tackle all the difficulties respectively mentioned above. What’s more, the translator has attained experiences through this practice.
