| This translation practice is based on Foucault’s Askēsīs—An Introduction to the Philosophical Life,a typical social science text written by Edward McGushin,a professor from Stonehill College.The author explored Michel Foucault’s studies in his late years,presented and sorted out the philosophical pedigree contained in Foucault’s thoughts.The book consists of eight chapters.The practice report is based on the seventh chapter of the book "Rage for Order:The Advent of Biopower",focusing on the translation strategies of postpositive attributives under the guidance of Communicative Translation Theory.The Communicative Translation Theory,proposed by Peter Newmark,a famous translation researcher,requires that the thoughts and emotions obtained by the readers of the target text should be as similar as possible to those obtained by the readers of the source text.Postpositive attributive is a grammatical phenomenon with complex structures and the postpositive attributives contained in the text are often an important part illustrating Foucault’s philosophical thoughts.Therefore,it is very important to translate them accurately and smoothly.Based on previous studies on postpositive attributives,this report divides postpositive attributives in English into four types:adjectives or adjective phrases,prepositional phrases,non-finite verbs and attributive clauses.Based on Communicative Translation Theory,this paper explores translation strategies suitable for various types of postpositive attributives and tries to convey the understanding and feelings of the source text readers as far as possible among the target readers.The report consists of six chapters.Chapter one is introduction,which introduces the reasons for material selection,research background and significance of the translation practice report Chapter two briefly describes the whole process of translation practice.Chapter three is literature review,which systematically introduces Communicative Translation Theory and its principles.The postpositive attributive phenomenon in English and Chinese is contrasted and discussed in chapter four and the postpositive attributives in English are classified.Chapter five is case study.Under the guidance of Communicative Translation Theory,various kinds of postpositive attributives in the translation practice are translated by combining various kinds of translation strategies.Chapter six is conclusion,which summarizes the main findings and shortcomings of the translation practice. |
