A Report On The Translation Of Oil And Gas Engineering For Non-Engineers(Chapters One To Three)

This thesis is a report on a translation practice of which the source text is Chapters One to Three of a published book,Oil and Gas Engineering for Non-Engineers by Quinta Nwanosike Warren.The source text introduces in detail the general,geological and engineering knowledge related to the upstream oil and gas industry.The three chapters are arranged from simple to complex with vivid illustrations.Currently,China is facing the challenges of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality,the world is seeing an international energy shortage due to geopolitical conflicts,and the oil and gas industry has gained great attention as never before.Under such circumstances,the translation of the source text meets the needs of some Chinese readers.It is good material for newcomers in this industry and people interested in this industry but without prior knowledge.It provides a global vision for Chinese readers to better understand this industry.Meanwhile,the translation practice can enrich the bilingual language resources in this professional field and provide relevant experiences for other translators or language learners.This translation report is divided into five chapters.The first chapter briefly introduces the translation practice and this translation report.The second chapter gives an introduction to the source text,divides it into an informative text,and analyzes it from three levels,including lexical,syntactic,and textual levels.The third chapter introduces the guiding theory of this translation practice,namely,the Communicative Translation Theory.It illustrates the applicability of the theory to the informative text and the application of the theory in this translation practice with actual examples.The fourth chapter elaborates on the difficulties the translator encountered during the translation practice and their corresponding solutions.The difficulties include sentences with inanimate subjects and attributive clauses;the corresponding solutions for sentences with inanimate subjects include retention,omission,conversion,explicitation;for attributive clauses,pre-position,division and restructuring were adopted.The fifth chapter is the conclusion of this translation practice.
