Translation Of Attributive Clauses Under The Theory Of Communicative Translation

Architectural Theory:From the Renaissance to the Present introduces famous architects since the Renaissance.The excerpt in this thesis focuses on four English architects and their books.Architectural Theory,as a textbook in architecture,is an informative text in which there are numerous attributive clauses.This thesis aims to find out the most appropriate translation methods for various attributive clauses in order to fully convey the information of the source text and make the translation fluent and easy to understand.The Communicative Translation Theory,focusing on the readers of target language,accords great emphasis on the reading experience of the translated text.Therefore,it is suitable for guiding the study of this thesis.Under the principles of Communicative Translation Theory,the translator is authorized to adjust and amend the vocabulary and syntax of the source text to meet the expectation of readers.While translating,the translator sorted all the attributive clauses into three types:restrictive,non-restrictive and compound attributive clauses.Restrictive attributive clauses are divided into actual and formal restrictive attributive clauses.Under the Communicative Translation Theory,the translator selected proper translation methods according to the clauses’ closeness to and function in the main clause.In conclusion,actual restrictive clauses that are short are translated into a part of the main clauses;actual restrictive clauses that are long are partly translated as a part of the main clauses and partly into a parallel clause.Formal restrictive attributive clauses and non-restrictive attributive clauses are translated into parallel clauses or separated sentences and compound attributive clauses should be translated flexibly.
