A Report On C-E Translation Of Emancipation:Cultural Memory Of The Miao Women In Xijiang(Excerpts)

The source text of this translation practice report is selected from Professor Zhang Xiao’s monograph Emancipation: Cultural Memory of the Miao Women in Xijiang published in 2018,which depicts the living status of the Miao women in Xijiang,Guizhou.Its third chapter,chosen by the translator for this translation practice,mainly introduces the life journey of the Miao women in both family and society.Furthermore,the monograph boasts a clear theme about the Miao women,a particular group,and its characterization is simple but vivid,which has value for certain research.The focus and difficulty of this translation practice are how to accurately convey the rich cultural connotation of the source text and truly display the image of the Miao women in Xijiang.Furthermore,the monograph mainly narrates the suffering experienced by the Miao women as well as their strong will,which embodies their inner world.Therefore,to fully reproduce the author’s standpoint of feminism and the feminist color of the source text,rather than simply achieving linguistic equivalence while conveying the cultural identity of the translator,the translator selected Feminist Translation Theory as the guiding theory.Starting from two translation methods of thick translation and rewriting,the translator adopted feminist translation strategies such as footnoting,in-text explanations,supplementing,obscurity,hijacking,and omission to translate the characterization of the family and social roles of the Miao women,finally reaching the cultural exchanges between Chinese and English.This translation report aims to let more English readers gain an in-depth understanding of the rich culture of the Miao.Meanwhile,it is also about providing some reference for the translation study of the same type of the cultural text.
