Since the birth of cinema,literature has become its most reliable aesthetic resource.Film and television works are cultural and spiritual products,and the adaptation of literature into film is a topic that has been continuously explored in the study of film and television works.So far,many successful works in the history of cinema have come from the adaptation of literary works,and classic literary works provide an endless source of inspiration for film creation.This cannot be achieved without the exploration of adaptation and creation by researchers from various countries.In China,the experiences and theories of literary adaptation in film by scholars such as Xia Yan and Ling Zifeng have become an important part of China’s film adaptation theory.The relationship between film and the original works explored by these researchers provides different ideas for the creative practice of film adaptation in China.China has a long history of adapting animated films from literature.In 1941,the Wan brothers adapted The Princess Iron Fan from Journey to the West,which became China’s first animated feature film.Animated films adapted from literary works such as Journey to the West and Investiture of the Gods have always been a popular choice in China’s animation film industry.The imaginative stories in these novels can be fully expressed in animated films.Additionally,the shared elements of illusion and imagination between animated films and these novels allow the films to capture the fantastic worlds and stories described in the novels.Since the turn of the century,animated films adapted from these novels have flourished in China,starting with Monkey King: Hero Is Back,and Nezha: Birth of the Demon Child achieved the fourth highest box office record in Chinese film history.Recent films such as White Snake and Nezha Reborn also prove the important role and status of adapting these novels into animated films.This article aims to explore and analyze the phenomenon of adapting animated films from Chinese mythological novels in five chapters.The first chapter mainly summarizes and explores the research and adaptation theories of Chinese mythological novels and briefly divides the process of adapting these novels into animated films into three different stages according to the era.The second chapter analyzes and explores the narrative of animated films adapted from these novels from several aspects,such as theme selection,character shaping,and different plot adaptations.The third chapter focuses on analyzing the aesthetic characteristics of animated films adapted from these novels from the perspective of traditional spiritual elements,deconstruction and reconstruction of mythological stories,technological development,and the integration of Chinese and Western cultures.The fourth chapter summarizes the successful cases of recent animated films adapted from these novels in China,and identifies the valuable adaptation and creative ideas that can be learned and borrowed.The fifth chapter concludes by summarizing the main issues and countermeasures in the current production of animated films adapted from Chinese mythological novels,as well as the value and significance of the dissemination of these adaptations.
