The source text of this translation project is an excerpt from the book The History of National Southwest Associated University: Peking,Tsinghua and Nankai From 1937 to 1946,compiled by the Beijing Alumni Association of National Southwest Associated University and published by Peking University Press in 2006.Based on a large collection of original documents and historical pictures, the book presents the wandering course of this famous school in wartime and its academic spirit of perseverance. The translator chooses Section Four of Chapter Three as the source text of this translation project, which combines the informative function and vocative function to convey to the readers,in precise and clear language, the dedication and sacrifice made by the faculty and students of NSAU for domestic peace as well as a peaceful and free academic environment. This translation report consists of five parts, namely, description of translation projects, translation process, introductions to theoretical framework, case analysis and summary. In the pre-translation stage, the translator repeatedly studies Chapter Three to find out its language features and grasp the key information of the text.In the process of in-translation,the problems encountered by translators mainly focus on the lack of knowledge about technical terms, the understanding of logical relations of long and difficult sentences and the lack of expressive ability.By reading other parallel texts, the translator collects relevant background information to improve the quality of the translation. In the post-translation stage, the translator summarizes and classifies the translation problems, writes reports and makes case analysis under the guidance of Adaptation Theory. In the process of translation, the translator made use of online translation tools to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the translation. Then in the revision stage, repeated modifications such as self-proofreading,peer-proofreading and supervisor revision were carried out to improve the quality of the translation. In the report writing stage, the translator chose Adaptation Theory to carry out practical analysis on the problems and difficulties encountered, and combined translation strategies such as literal translation and free translation,as well as translation techniques such as addition,part-of-speech conversion and voice conversion to improve the readability of the translation and achieve the purpose of cross-cultural communication.Through this translation practice, the translator has deeply realized that Rome was not built in a day, which requires serious research and patient polishing. At the same time, the translator has accumulated valuable experience in theoretical understanding and how to use theory to solve the problems in translation practice. The translator hopes that this translation report can contribute some helpful inspirations for other translators and the related translation practices in the future. |
