A C-E Translation Report On Chapter 15 Of Twenty-Five Lectures Of National Southwest Associated University From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

The material selected for this Chinese-English translation report is chapter 15 of Twenty-Five Lectures of National Southwest Associated University written by Professor Wu Baozhang of Yunnan Normal University.This chapter is about Wen Yiduo’s eight years in Kunming.Wen Yiduo is a great poet,an outstanding scholar,a great patriot and a determined democracy fighter.As one of the important members of National Southwest Associated University(NSAU),Wen Yiduo sacrificed his life for the country and the nation.The spirit of fearlessness and patriotism of Wen Yiduo is also the spirit of NSAU.The translation aims to carry forward this spirit and promote the exchange of Chinese and Western culture.Relevance theory is used to guide this translation practice.Relevance theory is a cognitive pragmatics theory proposed by Sperber and Wilson.The theory combines cognition with pragmatic research and points out that language communication is an ostensive-inferential process as well as proposes optimal relevance.Gutt then applied relevance theory to translation and pointed out that seeking optimal relevance is the decisive factor for translation.Translation should meet two requirements according to relevance theory: first,it should provide sufficient contextual effect;second,it should not require target readers to make unnecessary processing effort.The translator translated the source text under the guidance of relevance theory.The translation report looks for the best contextual effect to achieve optimal relevance to manage the communicative intention of the translation from the perspective of language and cultural backgrounds.Firstly,the translator explored how to achieve optimal relevance at the lexical level from two aspects: reasonable deletion of vocabulary as well as the conversion between static words and dynamic words.At the same time,the translator showed how to achieve optimal relevance at syntactic level from three aspects: adding prepositions and relative words,adding subjects and the conversion between active and passive voices.Finally,the translator divided the cultural backgrounds into four different sections to discuss the correspondingtranslation strategies to achieve optimal relevance such as literal translation,liberal translation and annotation.The report is mainly composed of five parts,which are the introduction to the project,the translation process,theoretical framework,case studies,and the conclusion of the project.
