The Collins series of dictionaries has always been aimed at "learning pure English",and all the definitions,examples,and columns in the new version of the dictionary are based on the Collins English corpus with a collection of 4.5 billion words.All words and phrases use the full sentence definitions to highlight the use of item items in specific contexts,which has high authority and attention in the dictionary field.The new version of the Collins COBUILD Middle Level English-Chinese Learner’s Dictionary,launched by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press in 2017,not only inherits the readability and ease of use of the previous version,but also comprehensively covers new words and meanings,and sets up structural prompts and word matching boxes,which is of great help to English learners.Taking the new edition of Collins COBUILD Middle Level English-Chinese Learner’s Dictionary as the research object,starting from the professional theory and practice of lexicography compilation,this paper makes a more comprehensive analysis and objective evaluation of the compilation and translation of the dictionary by means of qualitative analysis,case study,literature reference and other methods.And apply theories such as contextual theory,teleology,functional equivalence theory,and pragmatic theory to analyze the process of translation and compilation.Chapter 1 is the introduction section,which is divided into five sections,mainly providing a brief overview and explanation of the research background,current status,significance,key points,difficulties,and innovations of the entire paper.Chapter 2 is a study on the compilation of the Collins COBUILD Middle Level English-Chinese Learner’s Dictionary.It is divided into four parts and provides a detailed discussion on the principles of bilingual dictionary compilation.Based on the compilation background and characteristics of this bilingual dictionary are listed and explained.Through the comparison of the Longman Middle level English-Chinese Learner’s Dictionary(5th edition)and Oxford Middle level English-Chinese Learner’s Dictionary(5th edition)from the corpus,vocabulary,lexical arrangement,layout binding and other functions to explore the macro differences in existing bilingual dictionaries.At the same time,compare the three bilingual dictionaries from a micro perspectiveChapter 3 is divided into four parts,mainly explaining the relevant theories involved in the translation process of bilingual dictionaries,including pragmatic theory,contextual theory,functional equivalence theory,and teleology,combined with translation practice.At the same time,this paper also introduces the translation methods of bilingual dictionaries,such as literal translation,free translation,foreignization and domestication.Chapter 4 describles the shortcomings under the context of the prevalence of electronic dictionaries in the new era,by analysing the market of the electronic bilingual dictionaries.Chapter 5 is divided into four parts,which disscusses the problems and solutions from the perspective of compilation and translation,on the basement of the pre-textual disscussion.Conclusion summarizes the characteristics and existing problems of the Collins COBUILD Middle Level English-Chinese Learner’s Dictionary,taking the digital electronic era as the background,from the perspectives of compilation and translation,and provides prospects for the future development of this research and bilingual dictionaries.At the same time,it reflects on the shortcomings of the paper. |
