| The American Sinologist(Ronald C.Egan)has been devoted to the study of Chinese classical literature for many years, especially in the poetics of the Song Dynasty, the culture of the Song Dynasty and the art history of the Song Dynasty.Influenced by the Western view of new cultural history, the root of Egan’s Sinological thought is a strong sense of literary culture. Therefore, this dissertation will take a new cultural history of su shi research as a breakthrough point, through the interpretation of one in the study of su shi crucial three dimensions: ways of interpreting text and history, research vectors of orthodoxy and unorthodoxy, pluralistic identity construction, and analysis of su shi research characteristics and limitations.First, based on the applicability and pioneering nature of the new cultural history research method to literary studies, the logical structure of Egan’s Sushis research is examined comprehensively, and Egan’s macro and micro perspective and its effective value in textual analysis are clarified.Secondly,we explore the different thematic tendencies of Egan’s research before and after he was influenced by the new cultural history, and analyze the specific manifestations of his shift from “literary studies” to“cultural studies”.Egan’s study of the traditional literary style of Su Shi follows the path of literary studies, but at the same time carries western theoretical references, and his analytical perspectives such as “mirror” and “mask” are in line with traditional Chinese literary theory, which enriches the way of reading ancient literary texts. His study of informal genres and cultural elements such as calligraphy and collecting reflects a shift toward the “external study” of literature, which in turn leads from psychological analysis to the “history of anxiety” and provides an entry point for studying the wider cultural transformation of the Northern Song.Through further analysis, the thesis points out that Egan portrays a pluralistic image of Su Shi to Western readers through identity construction, illustrates Su Shi’s identity in different levels of culture and his value identity in different environmental contexts, and offers novel insights into Song literati and Song-type culture with the help of gender theory. Finally,an attempt is made to objectively review the characteristics of Egan’s study of Su Shi and to dialectically view the characteristics and limitations in his study.Egan’s research characteristics, which are outside and inside, comprehensively introduce Su Shi as a “Karisma”-type figure to Western readers and accomplish the purpose of updating his impression. However,at the same time, the selection of research materials is biased by sinologists seeking for newness and detail, and there are different degrees of misinterpretation in the process of interpretation,as well as the shortcomings of ‘fragmentation’ brought by the new cultural historiography, which leads to the imbalance between general cases and case studies in the writing of literary history. This thesis adopts an interdisciplinary research method and a translation research method, and based on the reading of Egan’s related works, looks at his study of Sushis from the perspective of new cultural history, grasps the research method of new cultural history and the author’s multidimensional interpretation of related texts and materials based on this concept, and finally reveals the applicability of his study of Sushis and its value and significance for the study of literature and cultural history. |
