A Study On Far Eastern Games And Modern Shanghai Sports Development(1913-1934)

The Far East Games is an international sports competition established at the beginning of the 20 th century on the proposal of the YMCA,formerly known as the "Carnival" held in the Philippines.The Far East Games,referred to as the Far East Games,was held from 1913 to 1934,with a total of ten sessions lasting more than 20 years.The participating countries were China,Japan and the Philippines.The games were held among the cities of the Philippines,China and Japan,and later India,Indonesia,Thailand and other countries joined,making it the largest sports games in Asia at that time.It is also the first regional international event publicly recognized by the International Olympic Committee,which has a high status of sports games.The2 nd,5th and 8th Far East Games were all held in Shanghai,China.Shanghai has the deepest relationship with Far East Games in China,and its sports development has been greatly influenced by FAR East Games.This paper takes the Far East Games and the development of sports in Shanghai as the research object,adopts the methods of historical analysis,literature analysis,comparative analysis and case analysis,and uses the first-hand data about the Far East Games and modern sports in Shanghai,such as Shen Bao,to break through the limitation of the research on the Far East Games which is limited to the sports field itself.Taking the Far East Games and the modern sports development of Shanghai as the research object,this paper analyzes the influence of Far East Games on the sports development of Shanghai.This article holds that the Far East Games,as a sports event with great influence,has brought profound influence to the school sports construction,the public sports development,the establishment of sports organizations and the construction of sports venues in Shanghai area.The first is the relationship between the Far East Games and school sports construction.The demand of selecting excellent athletes for the Far East Games prompted Shanghai schools to change the content of physical education of traditional military national gymnastics,and began to integrate with the West.In the period of the Nanjing National Government,in order to strengthen the unified management of the country,Nationalistic physical education thought has become the mainstream teaching thought.Secondly,the Far East Games and the development of public sports,the Far East Games brought a large number of spectators,athletes and spectators spread new sports,so that the public sports in Shanghai.Once again,the Far East Games and sports organization were founded.The Far East Games needed the highest administrative organization.This task was transferred from the YMCA to the China Amateur Sports Federation,whose functions and powers were still in the hands of foreigners.Last but not least,the Far East Games and the construction of stadiums.The Far East Games held in Shanghai required the use of stadiums.From renting stadiums in concession areas to building stadiums by ourselves,China’s sports industry moved forward greatly.The main conclusion of this paper is that the Far East Games will promote the development of sports in Shanghai.Firstly,the Far East Games promoted the change of school sports guiding ideology and the introduction of physical education courses.Secondly,the Far East Games played a role in promoting public participation in sports and developing women’s sports.Third,the Far East Games played a driving role in the formation of sports organizations and the construction of stadiums,and promoted the modernization of sports in Shanghai.At the same time,the Far East Games also has limitations on the development of Shanghai sports,mainly reflected in the excessive emphasis on results and ranking,"championship system" and "player system" sports selection methods are promoted,in the school physical education curriculum,school physical education has become a platform to select excellent athletes,affecting the physical education teaching of all students,is not conducive to the healthy development of sports;Under the background of the weak national strength of the Republic of China,excessive investment in the construction of stadiums and gymnasiumsresulted in excessive financial funds used in the construction of stadiums and gymnasiumsdid not achieve the reasonable allocation of social resources,which affected the healthy development of sports.But generally speaking,the Far East Games brought more constructive influence than negative influence to the development of sports in Shanghai.It promoted the development of sports in modern Shanghai and made Shanghai become the most developed sports area in modern China and the model city of sports in China at that time.
