Populism has played an important role in the development of American history, with the radical right-wing movement known as Dixiecratism being at the core of conservative movements in 20 th century America. In particular, during the civil rights movement of the1960 s,this white supremacist faction in the South became a significant force opposing progressive sentiment, indirectly influencing both the process and outcome of civil rights activism and having far-reaching impacts on American politics and social attitudes in subsequent decades.Hence its very important to analyse and study their resistance movement during this period. The purpose of this research paper is to analyze the relationship between the radical right-wing in the southern United States and the civil rights movement during the 1960 s,specifically identifying the role played by the South in the civil rights movement of 20 th century America, and thus reassessing the progressive movement in America. This thesis needs to address the following issues: under what conditions did the radical right in the South develop, what were its birth environment and subsequent stimulating factors;secondly, what was the interaction between the American civil rights movement of the last century and intentional white resistance movements, how did they react to the impact of civil rights on Southern regions;finally, objectively analyzing the role and nature of resistance movements by white radicals in America in the last century. This includes their role within American society as a whole,as well as their inherent connection with mainstream American society. This paper mainly adopts the following writing methods: First, case study method, namely to discuss based on the civil rights movement of the United States in the last century and its effects;secondly, comparative research method, that is to distinguish between two historical concepts that are internally similar in order to correct errors and prejudices;thirdly, literature review method, which proves the scientificity of the content by citing a large amount of text and data from original literature. This thesis provides valuable insights through specific analysis: firstly,by understanding the broad white public opinion behind Southern conservatism,we can see that the conservative right in America is a product of traditional American liberalism.Secondly,by examining the intense conflict between progressives and conservatives throughout history,we can objectively showcase the real face of civil rights movements without completely affirming or absolutely criticizing them. Finally,it offers reference for understanding modern American right-wing populism and clarifies its connection with modern American conservatism. The main writing framework of this thesis consists of the following four parts:Chapter One mainly introduces the historical background of the awakening of white right-wing in the southern United States;Chapter Two mainly introduces the process of white resistance movement and how to promote the development and growth of southern right-wing forces;Chapter Three mainly introduces how southern right-wing forces reorganized and counteracted civil rights movements, and Chapter Four mainly discusses the impact of radical white right-wing resistance movements on American social development. In my writing,I will use detailed literature materials and logical reasoning to study the interaction between the radical right-wing of Southern white people and American progressivism during the peak of the civil rights movement from 1960-1968,in order to achieve the goal required by this paper. At the same time, this will also provide some inspiration for our understanding of American political life today.
