When Americans elected their first African American president Barack Obama,people all over the world were really surprised. African Americans were excited andextremely honored since their American dream is symbolically realized. It took themcenturies to fight, to struggle and to fulfill the dream.The purpose of this thesis is to briefly look at African American history, toclosely analyze the causes of the African American Civil Rights Movement in the1950s and1960s. The improvement of African American education level plays a veryimportant role in the movement. The Second World War also contributes to themovement. By reviewing some typical civil rights cases, the thesis discusses theimpacts of the Civil Rights Movement on African Americans, on the United States,and on the whole world.The thesis describes the miserable life of African Americans in the southernstates before the Civil War, narrates their sufferings from the deeply rooted racialdiscrimination and racial segregation, emphasizes different campaigns in the effectiveCivil Rights Movement, mentions some famous historic figures in the campaigns, andinvestigates the functions of the Civil Rights Movement.To make the thesis convincing, in the thesis, the author employs the quotationsfrom famous persons, and statistical data.The thesis also points out that through so many years of struggle, AfricanAmericans have got their dignity and equality in the United States now, but some ofthem may still have some problems in their life because of their skin color, so theystill have a long way to go in order to get the complete freedom and equality, and tomake the United States democratic and fair.
