| The development of modern biotechnology and the continuous upgrading of scientific means in the field of art have provided more means and methods for biological artists to manipulate media,and with it,the life forms in biological art have also shown diversified characteristics.In the context of biological art,living media carry particularly important interactive functions,and highlight the aesthetic characteristics of the integration of life and art.At the same time,the element of life not only provides a life construction for Bio Art,but also permeates the inherent bioethics of Bio Art.Based on the classification of biological art by previous scholars,the author divides the types of biological art media into four categories: biological materials,life processes,biological systems and biological concepts.It summarizes the four characteristics of activity,diversity,interaction and temporality.According to the above categories,characteristics and artists’ practice methods,the forms of media in bio-art practice can be divided into three categories: "active","symbolic" and "conceptual".Artistic practices based on "active" media include gene inheritance and conversion,life cloning,living cell and tissue culture,etc.,and their artistic expression is characterized by the process of life growth,vital signs and vital changes,and this type of artistic practice usually includes the participation of living organisms;In art practice based on the "symbolic" medium,artists symbolize the expression of biological materials or biological information,such as genes,DNA sequences,proteins,etc.Compared with "active" life art,"symbolic" media present static,lifeless characteristics;"Conceptual" bio-artistic media are those substances that express biological materials,biological information,or organisms in a thoughtful way,such as ecosystems,biodiversity,bioethics,etc.Through the perspective of "artist-media-viewer",the author analyzes the functional and aesthetic characteristics of media in bio-art practice.In the practice of biological art,media covers three identities as intermediaries,channels for interactive information between artists and viewers,and technical means on which channels depend,realizing self-breakthroughs in the identity of media in previous art.The participation of biological art media in art practice not only brings rich life aesthetic characteristics to the latter,but also allows people to reflect and examine the life and human beings themselves in participating in art practice.In biological art,the act of human manipulation or transformation of other species or themselves,on the one hand,stems from the creative concept of artists,who want to use this formal language to remind people of respect for nature and science and technology,and advocate the harmonious coexistence between humans and species;On the other hand,this act itself separates human life from life of other species.Therefore,in the context of biological art,people urgently need to solve the problem not only how to improve the means of technology or create a new form of life,but also need to formulate a reasonable moral scale for the practice of biological art,emphasizing bioethics,so as to achieve harmonious coexistence between man and nature,man and machine,man and other species. |
