| Issues like acid rain, desertification and global warming have been causing damage to the ecosystem on the earth, which has drawn international attention from conservationists and scientists. How to preserve the existing ecosystem, restore degraded ecosystem and improve the function of degraded ecosystem remains a problem to be solved. In such context,Restoration Ecology came into being and became one of the research focuses in the field of Ecology around the world. To facilitate the development of Restoration Ecology in China and information exchange, the translation of relevant books is a requisite. The book,Restoration Ecology: The New Frontier, introduces theories, models and concepts of ecology. This project is a collaboration by four translators in a team and the translator is responsible for the first two chapters of this book.Under the guidance of the text type theory, the translator employs different methods and techniques to handle difficulties at the lexical, syntactic, and discourse level. At the lexical level, standardized terms are verified by official documents to ensure the accuracy of the target text, while those non-standardized terms and compound words are translated by annotation and proper wording for better readability. From the syntactic perspective, conversion is adopted to transform the passive voice into active voice so as to conform to the habits of the Chinese language;recasting is used to make the rendering smooth and coherent. At the level of discourse, the translator utilizes repetition and ellipsis to deal with the cohesion devices in English to achieve semantic coherence. This translation report presents an overview of the difficulties in the E-C translation of texts on ecological science and technology and offer solutions accordingly under the guidance of the text type theory. It is hoped that this project would provide reference for the translation study and facilitate the development of ecological science and technology. |
