A Report On The E-C Translation Of Restoration Ecology:The New Frontier (Excerpts)

With the rapid development of economy and the increasing growth of population,problems such as environmental pollution and ecosystem degradation are becoming more and more prominent.Against this background,many texts on restoration and reconstruction of the ecological environment have emerged at home and abroad.To better restore the deteriorating ecological environment,every country needs to learn from others’ experience in environmental restoration,so the translation of such texts has received more and more attention from scholars.The source text selected for this project is Chapters 9 and 10 of Restoration Ecology: The New Frontier.It is a scientific and technical text.It shows readers the basic concepts involved in restoration ecology and restoration methods of different ecosystems in objective and accurate language.The scientific and technical text has strict structure and logic.When translating this text,special attention should be paid to the effective communication of meaning and the shift of sentence structure according to the differences between the English and Chinese.According to these requirements,the translator chose the theory of category shifts as the theoretical support to provide solutions to the difficulties encountered in translation.Under the guidance of structure shifts,the shifts between active and passive voice,postmodifiers and premodifiers,and affirmative and negative sentences were chosen to solve translation difficulties such as the frequent occurrence of passive voice and postmodifiers in the source text.Under the guidance of class shifts,according to the different characteristics of English and Chinese vocabulary,different parts of speech can be converted to make the translation smooth and easy to understand.Under the guidance of unit shifts,the translation of long and complex sentences was completed through the shifts between words,phrases and sentences so that the translation is in line with the reading habits of target readers.This translation practice shows that the flexible application of category shifts in the translation of ecological texts can ensure the fluency and accuracy of the translation and improve the readability of the target text.And this practice can,on the one hand,help relevant domestic researchers learn about the successful experience of ecological restoration in Europe;on the other hand,it can provide reference for the translation practice of similar texts under the guidance of category shifts.
