With the strengthening of China’s comprehensive national power,the "Chinese language fever" has gradually spread to all corners of the world,and more and more foreigners are learning Chinese as their second language and choosing to study and live in China.Language and culture are inseparable,and the learning of language is inseparable from the learning of cultural knowledge,and the learning of Chinese culture will definitely be involved in the process of learning Chinese.Therefore,it is of theoretical and practical significance to investigate the correlation between foreign students’ Chinese language proficiency and their knowledge of Chinese culture,and to understand the factors that affect foreign students’ knowledge of Chinese culture,so as to improve the teaching of Chinese culture to foreigners.With Based on the cultural adaptation model theory,cultural cognition theory and intercultural communication theory,cultural cognition and intercultural communication,this paper uses a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods to conduct a comprehensive survey on 152 international students’ personal profiles,the correlation between their Chinese language proficiency and their perceptions of Chinese culture,the factors that affect their perceptions of Chinese culture,and their needs for learning Chinese culture.Based on the findings of the data and the interview results,the study will propose a targeted teaching proposal.The questionnaire used in this study has passed the tests of reliability,validity and inter-item relationship,and the following conclusions have been drawn from the study while ensuring the scientific structure of the questionnaire and the quality of the questions.First,from the overall perspective,the relationship between international students’ Chinese language proficiency and their Chinese culture awareness shows a weak correlation.Second,further analysis of the factors affecting international students’ perceptions of Chinese culture shows that the length of Chinese language study and the average grade of Chinese courses have significant effects on international students’ perceptions of material and behavioral culture,while the stage of study and HSK level have no significant effects on international students’ perceptions of Chinese culture.Third,international students generally have positive attitudes toward learning Chinese culture and believe that learning Chinese culture can help them improve their Chinese language skills.In addition,it was found that international students’ knowledge of Chinese institutional culture and conceptual culture was low,and the way of understanding Chinese culture was also single.Moreover,international students generally think that teachers in Chinese language courses do not explain Chinese cultural contents sufficiently.
