Due to its short growth period,cold and drought resistance,highland barley is very suitable for the environment of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau.By reviewing various academic studies and combining the "metaphors" of most myths circulating on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau,it can be concluded that highland barley should have been spread from outside to the Qinghai Tibet Plateau,gradually replacing the position of "millet" and becoming the main crop on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau.According to research,during the period of the Republic of China,the cultivation of highland barley in Qinghai expanded the planting area and distribution range with the reclamation of wasteland,with obvious characteristics consistent with the expansion of government reclamation areas.At the same time,the distribution characteristics of highland barley cultivation in various regions within Qinghai are distinct,with extensive distribution in Hehuang Qinghai region,and scattered distribution in Qaidam region and Qingnan region.During the Republic of China period,the cultivation of highland barley in Qinghai was in a relatively stable state.The outbreak of the Anti Japanese War did not have a significant impact on the cultivation of highland barley,and the agricultural economy was even in a period of development.In addition,during the period of the Republic of China,Qinghai highland barley cultivation and cultivation techniques were relatively mature,mainly including seed selection,sowing,soil cultivation,weeding,fertilization,harvesting,rotation,and fallow.However,in Hehuang Qinghai region,where the agricultural foundation is good,highland barley cultivation was intensive and meticulous,while in Qaidam and Qingnan regions,the cultivation of Mongolian and Tibetan ethnic groups was very rough.During the period of the Republic of China,China had begun the modernization of agriculture,and modern agricultural science and technology were slowly developing.However,due to Qinghai’s location in the northwest inland region,limited external influence had not changed much.Although various planning measures were proposed by the Qinghai Provincial Government and non-governmental scholars,they were not fully implemented,that is,the gradually introduced modern agricultural science and technology did not complete the improvement of Qinghai’s agriculture,and it was not until the founding of New China that they were successful.In terms of the processing and utilization of highland barley,during the Republic of China period,the processing method of highland barley inherited tradition and had limited changes.The processing method of frying before grinding has a long history,mainly used for the processing of edible barley,which is the main consumer food of various ethnic groups and occupies an important position in their dietary structure;The processing method of brewing enables barley to be converted into industrial products for sale,promoting the commercialization of barley.However,its processing technology is relatively low and still appears immature in the handicraft industry.Throughout the Republic of China period,highland barley played an important role in the economic life of the people of Qinghai.In addition to being used for taxation,it was also used for salary distribution and as a commodity exchange.Herders exchange their livestock products for goods such as barley and barley wine,while farmers exchange barley for essential goods such as cloth and salt.This exchange often accompanies inequality and is not conducive to the development of Qinghai’s modern economy.In addition,the deep penetration of highland barley into the lives of various ethnic groups in Qinghai not only satisfies their appetite,but also provides spiritual sustenance for them.Barley not only plays an important role in the sacrificial ceremonies of various ethnic groups in Qinghai,but also conveys good wishes in life rituals.Barley wine culture is also an important component of Qinghai ethnic culture.Highland barley not only brings material satisfaction to the people of all ethnic groups in Qinghai,but also enriches their spiritual and cultural needs,making important contributions to shaping Qinghai’s distinctive ethnic culture.
