English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022)points out that primary school students should master about 500 words and apply them into communication with regard to certain topics.Meanwhile,it also mentions that teachers should improve the effectiveness of the application of information technology and pay attention to the development and progress of information technology in the field of English teaching.Vocabulary teaching,placing a crucial part in English teaching in primary school,is the key and difficult point of teaching.Recent years have witnessed the rapid development of information technology,which has played an important role in teaching.The advent and development of various kinds of multimedia resources and teaching software provide new developing opportunities for English teaching in primary school.Based on the previous studies and four theories,namely,critical period hypothesis,situated cognition,multimodal discourse analysis and metacognitive theory,this study explores the application of information technology in vocabulary teaching in primary school.The author chooses 45 students of grade 4 in a primary school in Chengdu City as the research objects and uses the PEP English textbook as the teaching material to conduct two rounds of action research.Before the first round of research,the author of the present research has known that some students were not interested in vocabulary learning and not capable of using English words according to the questionnaires and vocabulary tests.Therefore,the present research proposes two questions for this action research:1.What effect does the application of information technology in the primary school English vocabulary teaching have on the vocabulary learning interest of students?2.What effect does the application of information technology in the primary school English vocabulary teaching have on the capability of using vocabulary of students?After identifying the research questions,the author of the present research carries out the first round of action research.After the research,questionnaires,vocabulary tests and interviews are conducted and the author makes self-reflection and analyzes the data.The results of this round of research suggests that the application of information technology can improve the interest of students in vocabulary learning and the level of capability of using English words,but the participation of students in vocabulary lessons and their listening and speaking skills still need to be promoted.Therefore,the implementation plan of the second round of the research is adjusted accordingly.After the second round of action research,questionnaires,vocabulary tests and interviews are conducted again and the author makes self-reflection and analyzes the data to know the effect of the application of information technology in the primary school English vocabulary teaching on the vocabulary learning interest and the capability of using vocabulary of students.The results show that the level of participation and satisfaction of students in vocabulary lessons are promoted and their listening and speaking skills are also improved.Besides,the gap of students’ vocabulary proficiency is narrowed.The results of questionnaires,vocabulary tests and interviews suggest that the application of information technology in primary school English vocabulary teaching can promote the participation and satisfaction of students in vocabulary learning and boost their confidence,and ultimately improve their interest in vocabulary learning.Meanwhile,it also helps the students comprehend and memorize English words and improve the level of capability of using vocabulary.Through the action research on the application of information technology in primary school English vocabulary teaching,the effect of applying it and better ways to use it to assist vocabulary teaching can be found.It can also provide experiences and ideas for practical teachers and promote the development of application of information technology in English vocabulary teaching in primary school.
