With the development of science and technology and the progress of the times,English as an international language has become an important cultural basic subject in domestic schools.For deaf students,English is a mandatory subject for college entrance examination and it is also an important skill for their future life.However,due to the lack of hearing ability,deaf students have more problems in understanding and using English vocabulary compared with normal students.How to teach deaf students to use English vocabulary better is the common problems faced by English teachers and students at deaf schools.So,what kind of teaching methods can change the current situation? Which vocabulary teaching methods are suitable for deaf students at junior high schools?In this study,the author adopts the survey approach and the experimental approach.Questionnaires,interviews and tests are used to investigate the English vocabulary learning methods and English comprehensive ability of the subjects before and after the experiment.SPSS statistical software and Questionnaire Star software are used for descriptive statistical analysis and related discussions.The subjects in the experiment are Grade Eight students of Dalian Blind and Deaf School.One of the two classes is the control class and the other is the experimental class.The experiment lasts a semester.In the experimental class,American Sign Language and multimedia information technology are used to teach and consolidate vocabulary.The experimental process includes: creating situations,pre-class study,classroom learning,teamwork discussion,presentation &conclusion,consolidation exercises and practical applications.Through data analysis,the results of the comparison of two testing scores indicate that: 1)Teaching vocabulary by American Sign Language can help deaf students grasp and use the vocabulary correctly and freely.2)Multimedia information technology can help students consolidate vocabulary and complete the teaching tasks efficiently.This study finds the problems and difficulties in English teaching of deaf students through the investigation of the current situation.By consulting relevant literatures at home and abroad,we find the theoretical basis and establish the experimental approach.For the first time,this thesis attempts to combine American Sign Language with teaching practice.The purpose is to provide some teaching suggestions for English teachers at deaf schools.Through analysis of the data,it is scientifically verified that it is feasible to teach English vocabulary for junior high school students by using American Sign Language and multimedia information technology.We hope it can help teachers at deaf schools a lot in teaching English vocabulary.
