A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of War And Progress:Britain,1914-1945(Excerpts)

British social and historical process is an indispensable part of the process of human history.A good understanding of British social history can not only help us to learn from history,but also promote exchanges between China and foreign countries.In this translation project,the author selects Chapter 8 and 10 of War and Progress,Britain: 1914-1945 for translation practice.These two chapters mainly describe British people’s social life and the development of leisure and entertainment in the interwar period.This translation text belongs to the social-science text with many proper nouns and long difficult sentences.In order to avoid the loss of information in the translation process between English and Chinese language,the author takes the translation compensation theory as the theoretical guidance,compensating the loss of English and Chinese words by using the strategies of amplification,extension and compensation by isolation,analyzing the translation at the sentence level by using the methods of transformation,division and combination,and offsetting the loss of English and Chinese texts through the adjustment of connectives and the restoration of demonstrative pronouns,actively exploring the key and difficult problems encountered in the Chinese translation of social-science texts,and putting forward solutions.The author hopes that,on the one hand,can have a more comprehensive understanding of British social history;on the other hand,through the application of translation practice and theory,the author has a more systematic and comprehensive understanding of the translation difficulties existing in the translation process,and learn how to overcome the translation difficulties under the guidance of theory.
