With the publication of more and more documentary literary works, how to present these documentary literary works to readers has become a key issue for translators.Successful translation of documentary works should not only maintain the artistic quality of the literary works, but also accurately convey the information to the readers,so that the readers can understand the true history and facts. At present, there are few systematic studies on the translation of documentary literary works in China,so it is particularly necessary to study the translation of documentary literary works. The book "Evidence: Unit 731 Ishii" reveals the real existence and wartime behavior of Unit 731 by means of documentary literature, basically outlines the basic features of Unit 731,and exposes the human experiments and the criminal facts of germ warfare in Unit 731.The translator takes the preface and the Chinese translation of the first chapter of the book as the content of translation practice, uses Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation theory to solve the problems encountered in translation, and discusses the application of semantic translation theory and communicative translation theory in the translation of documentary literary works, which provides a way of thinking for the translation of documentary literary works.Through this translation practice, the problems encountered in translation are summarized. The translator believes that semantic translation should be mainly used to retain the sentence structure of the original so as to reflect the language style of the original, and to be faithful to the meaning of the original so as to convey information objectively; At the same time, under the guidance of communicative translation, the translation difficulties caused by the differences in grammatical rules, syntactic structures, expression habits and cultural differences between Chinese and Japanese are overcome by splitting and reorganizing sentence patterns, applying Chinese idioms and adding translation notes,so as to make the translation more easily understood and accepted by readers.
