Multimodality uses multiple senses such as hearing,seeing,touching and many others to conduct communication by means of language,movements,tools and other symbolic resources,which provides technical support for optimizing interpreting practice.In the digital era,interpreters are suggested to flexibly apply multimodality to improve the ability to obtain information in multiple modalities,and adopt corresponding strategies in different modalities to further improve the quality of interpretating.From July 27 th to August 26 th,2021,the author had the opportunity to participate in the“Seminar on Engineering Project Management for Ethiopia” organized by Hunan Provincial Department of Commerce and hosted by Hunan Foreign Trade Vocational College,and completed the class interpreting.This project was the author’s first attempt to take the role of an interpreter.When fulfilling her daily work,the author notices that leveraging subjectivity of interpreters helps a lot to produce better interpreting by utilizing multimodality such as spoken language,movement and tools in this project.As the “gatekeeper” of the source text,the interpreter needs to reorganize the language when the speaker produces an improvised and raw source text.In this project,the author completed 30 hours of interpreting practice.The project recording screen provides a rich corpus for the writing of this report,which facilitates the author to elaborate the interpreter’s subjectivity in different modalities.Through the case analysis,the author found that language modality is the most direct presentation of interpreting and can be used to filter errors or redundant information from the source text,as well as to reorganize the logic of the source text;the cursor as an electronic embodiment of movement modality can be used to track the points of the class and emphasize key information;and the slides and whiteboard as tool modality can be used to supplement information or omit elaboration on mathematical equations.Therefore,in addition to indispensable language knowledge,the ability to apply subjectivity in multimodality should also be included in the criterion for evaluating interpreters.Similarly,interpreting teaching should also help students to master and apply subjectivity of interpreters with the help of multimodality. |
