| This thesis is a report on English-Chinese translation. The source text is selected from a biography,Strangers Have the Best Candy, written by Margaret Meps Schulte, who is a popular American tourism blogger and a freelance writer. It features touching content and lively and vivid language.Schulte narrates the unique trip experience and a series of true-life stories of American people from all walks of society, which could provide readers with the courage to be positive. And its exquisite and vivid language is worth deep research.Under the guidance of Toury’s theory of translational norms, this report takes the first five chapters of Strangers Have the Best Candy as the source text for the translation practice,to explore the suitability of preliminary norms, operational norms and initial norms,in memoir translation.Firstly, this report presents an introduction of the background, purposes and significance,so as to explore the guiding role of preliminary norms in text selection. And it also describes preparation before the translation practice, including source text analysis,Toury’s theory of translational norms, etc. Then, for an acceptable translation,it summarizes the difficulties in translating from the lexical, syntactic and textual levels, including translation of colloquial expressions, abstract expressions, broken sentences, periodic sentences and incoherent semantic expressions, etc. And next,it demonstrates specific translation methods summarized with the help of initial norms and operational norms.Specifically, concerning initial norms, the author of the report provides an acceptable translation under the restriction of the cultural, social and pragmatic norms in Chinese culture. It is mainly realized by adopting methods of the addition of implicit information, changes in sentence pattern, explicitation, etc. Methods like the recreation of the original style are also adopted to retain the tone of the source text.In addition, with the help of translation strategies and methods proposed by Toury in operational norms, methods like contextualization and splitting are adopted,to overcome the difficulties at the lexical, syntactic and textual levels. Finally, with these translation methods, this report probes how to achieve accuracy and readability of translation with examples.Through the analysis of this translation practice, the author of the report believes that Toury’s theory of translational norms plays a guiding role in the translation of memoirs, effectively solving many translation problems at the lexical, syntactic and textual levels, and it can provide a reference for translation research in the future. |
