A Translation Report On Mediocre:The Dangerous Legacy Of White Male America（Excerpts） Under The Guidance Of Toury’s Translational Norms

Sexism and racism,enduring topic for heated discussion in American political life,bears global significance.As this genre of book is absent at domestic market,the source text to be rendered into Chinese is likely to be profitable both in market and academic value.It provides creative perspectives for identity politics and feminism.At the same time,it reveals the salient inequality in American society and tries to find solutions,so it has practical significance.Previous research on political and social discourses mainly focuses on the ideology and discourse.A small number of research studies the racial oppression of one class on the other.The ST is quite distinctive in socio-political field.Therefore,finding the translation strategies is necessary.Translation is inseparable from social environment.Translators should follow certain norms to make sure that forms and content of TT are in line with ST.Toury（1980）,a translation scholar,introduced three kinds of specific translation norms:preliminary norms,initial norms and operational norms.The first is related to the choices of ST.The second determines the adequacy and acceptability of translation.The third provides strategies to adopt during translation.The translator aimed to achieve readability and acceptability by abiding the three norms.The translator selected 23 cases and carried out an intensive analysis of the application of Toury’s norms in socio-political translation,drawing the conclusion:Toury ’s norm could guide socio-political translation.On the one hand,this project proved the feasibility of applying Toury’s norms to socio-political translation.On the other hand,it specified the strategies that could be used,,including division and combination,addition and omission,annotation,change of location,change of voices and part of speech conversion.When carrying out the project,the translator improved her translation ability and gained more knowledge of socio-political translation.However,she also found it necessary to read more parallel texts,better understand the author’s intention and make more efforts to enhance her language proficiency.
