This is a thesis of translation report. The source text(ST)derives from Translation: The Basics, written by Juliane House.Translation: The Basics, published in 2018 by Routledge, introduces the basic issues of translation, the brief concepts in translation theory, the new trend of translation studies as well as the current practices of translation in the real world. The translator selects Part Four(Chapter 11 and Chapter 12),totaling 12,000 words,as the ST,which not only discusses the role translation plays in language learning and teaching, but also explores translation as a social practice in contemporary world situations. This translation task is under the guidance of Toury's translational norms theory, which consists of preliminary norms, initial norms and operational norms. In the process of translation, the translator mainly applies initial norms to guide the specific translation practice.Initial norms lay emphasis on the tendency of choice in translation. To tend to the source language determines the adequacy of translation. While, tending to the target language requires the acceptability of translation. The ST is plain and objective in language style, aiming at conveying knowledge and information. The translator, therefore, chiefly considers the acceptability of translation to help the target readers understand and obtain the original information.Theoretically speaking, under the guidance of Toury's translational norms, the translator analyzes the cases at the lexical level and the syntactical level, which is not only an attempt, but an extension to apply Toury's theory in non-literary field.Practically speaking, the translation of the ST enriches the translator's professional knowledge, broadens his horizon of studying and researching, and improves his ability of expressions between English and Chinese.Furthermore,it also benefits learners of translation and those engaged in translation studies.
