| In the context of the rapid development of the international economy, with the deepening and broadening of exchanges between countries, exchanges in the field of medicine are also increasing. As an important carrier for the communication and dissemination of medical research at home and abroad, the demand for translation of popular medical science texts is also increasing. Therefore, the translation of popular medical science texts is particularly important in today’s era.At the same time,as COVID-19 has continued to spread globally since 2020,the world is looking for ways to respond to the spread and control of the epidemic, and an important part of it is to understand international trends and the latest medical achievements. The translation of popular medical science texts can effectively promote international exchanges and jointly fight against the epidemic. In this context, medical translation is becoming more and more important, and high quality and high efficiency have become the necessary conditions for translating popular medical science texts. The original text of this translation practice report is excerpted from the American medical science book Fight Back:Beat the Coronavirus, and the translator takes this book of great medical science value as the object of study and translates it into Chinese, using Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory as the guiding principle, and mainly starts the study from five aspects, including the description of the translation task and translation procedure, overview of the translation principles, case analysis, and conclusion. In Chapter 4,the case study is carried out based on functional equivalence theory, respectively from lexical level, syntactic level, and textual level. At the lexical level, the translator mainly analyzes the translation of terminologies, nominalizations, and abbreviations;at the syntactic level, the translator mainly discusses the translation of some passive sentences and long and complicated sentences in the text, and at the textual level, the translator studies the cohesion and coherence between sentences and paragraphs.Through the combination of theory and practice, the author concludes that the functional equivalence theory is indeed universally applicable to the translation of popular medical science texts. In the translation of terminologies, nominalizations, and abbreviations, word formation and zero translation can be used. The method of voice conversion is adopted to translate the passive sentences, and appropriate segmentation is carried out in the translation of long and complicated sentences,so as to achieve syntactic equivalence. At the textual level, cohesion and coherence between sentences and paragraphs should be considered to achieve equivalence at the textual level.Through this translation practice, the author summarizes the translation methods, hoping to provide reference and research materials for the English-Chinese translation of popular medical science texts. |
