Textbook,as the main basis for teachers’ teaching and students’ learning, occupies an important place in the comprehensive courses of Chinese teaching as a foreign language. At the same time, exercise,as an indispensable part of textbook, can play a major role in not only students’ in-class practice and after-class self-checking,but also teachers’ lesson preparation,in-class training and after-class testing. Therefore,it is of great significance to study the setting and arrangement of exercise on the textbook for both students and teachers.Based on the textbook compiling theory and the textbook appraisal theory of Chinese teaching as a foreign language, this paper analyzes the quantity, type and content of exercise in the two sets of five volume textbook of“Developing Chinese(advanced comprehensive)” and “Advanced Course of Modern Chinese”,explores the advantages and disadvantages of exercise design in the textbook, and puts forward the corresponding compiling and teaching suggestions for the textbook exercises in the future. The first chapter is the introduction, which mainly includes the research significance, current situation, theoretical basis, research object and research methods. The second chapter, through a statistical analysis of the number of exercises in the five textbooks, finds that all the exercises in the textbooks embody the principle of “more teaching, more practice”,and that the total length of the exercises is higher than 1/3 of the total length of the textbook, which can meet the needs of teachers and students but has an uneven distribution in terms of quantity. The third chapter analyzes the types of exercise in the textbook, including the number of types of exercise in all,the number of types of exercise per lesson, and the main and secondary types of exercise. The results show that the number and balance of exercise types of textbook need to be further improved.Chapter 4 presents a specific analysis of the content of the exercises, including nine sub-points on the elements of language and speech skills. The results show that both sets of materials do not focus on phonological aspects because they are used in comprehensive courses. In the training of speech skills, there are also exercises to investigate students’ listening and speaking skills. In the two categories of conversation and paragraph expression, the exercises in “Advanced Course in Modern Chinese” are more traditional and less interesting than those in “Developing Chinese(advanced comprehensive)”.Chapter five, through interviews with front-line teachers and Chinese learners, draws out the textbook users’ evaluation of the layout and design of the exercises in the textbook.Based on the above analysis,Chapter 6 makes suggestions for the future development and teaching of exercises in the textbook, such as focusing on communicative exercises, strengthening the practice of phonetics, and increasing the development of listening and speaking skills. |
