According to the requirements of the New Curriculum,it advocates students of participating in class actively and cultivating students’ ability of acquiring new knowledge.Thus,it is necessary for the reform of English teaching to improve the students’ engagement.Because the pupil’s psychological development has particularity,the study of students’ engagement will be able to help us more effectively in primary school English teaching.Besides,Buzz-answering Game is a competitive game in which participants or participating teams scramble to achieve their goals under the premise of abiding by the rules of the game.In the process of the game,players can feel nervous and happy.It is in line with pupils’ psychological and age development characteristics and rules.So,in this study,we intend to use the Buzz-answering Game to stimulate students’ competitive consciousness,improve learning motivation through competition,promote students’ engagement in English class in primary school,and enrich the research on the application of motivation theory in teaching.To clarify the research ideas and methods,the author sorts and analyzes relevant researches on the engagement and Buzz-answering Game in classroom teaching at home and abroad.Then it proposes the necessity of integrating Buzz-answering Game into English classes in primary school to improve classroom engagement.Based on further literature research,the concept of Buzz-answering Game is defined,and the dimension of students’ engagement is analyzed,and the scale of students’ classroom engagement based on Buzz-answering Game is formed.At the same time,the theoretical research of the Buzz-answering Game is carried out to provide theoretical support for this paper.In this thesis,the author takes Class A and Class B of Grade 5 in S Primary School of G County in Hubei Province as the research subjects,and uses such research methods as Data analysis method,questionnaire,interview,and practical research to carry out the present research.By questionnaire study,it is found that students’ engagement in English class is not high in the current primary school and this can be illustrated in the following reasons: First,students could not listen insufficiently in the class so that they lacked of understanding the depth of the content.Secondly,the metacognitive strategies such as memorization of the learned content,applied cognitive strategies and self-learning control are not sufficient.Finally,students have low interest in learning English and even have a strong sense of learning anxiety.Based on these findings,this study designed the practical research in the experimental class(Class A)and the control class(Class B).Questionnaire survey and examination test were conducted in the two classes.There was no significant difference in the results of the two tests,which can be studied.The control class continued to use the traditional teaching method while the experimental class uses the Buzz-answering Game teaching practice with the specific six kinds of teaching design cases.During the practical teaching,20 students in the experimental class were randomly selected to conduct interviews aiming to understand their psychological dynamics and views on the teaching practice of Buzz-answering Game to adjust the teaching strategy in time.After 13-week experiment,a questionnaire survey and a test were conducted in these two English classes.SPSS software was used to analyze and sort out the collected data.It was found that Buzz-answering Game greatly improved students’ engagement and achievement in English class in primary school,which was embodied in three dimensions:(1)Behavioral engagement dimension: In the process of Buzz-answering Game,students will be more patient to listen to the teaching content due to their competitive psychology;In the process of discussion,students can choose tasks and learning methods more flexibly through communication,and have diversified understanding of the teaching content.(2)Cognitive engagement dimension: Due to the competition mechanism of Buzz-answering Game,in the process of competition,students will enhance their English learning level by improving cognitive strategies and metacognitive strategies,and will win the game and reduce their dependence on teachers.(3)Emotional engagement dimension: After the practice of Buzz-answering Game,students’ love for English learning has increased significantly,and they are more willing to use English in life and solve English problems in class.Students’ sense of achievement has been enhanced significantly,which alleviates their anxiety in English learning to a certain extent.Through this practical research,this study finds that Buzz-answering Game can improve students’ engagement in English class in primary school and it also can enhance students’ English learning motivation,promote students’ autonomous learning,increase classroom efficiency as well as provide some valuable reference for improving primary school English classroom engagement.
