In Chinese reading, compared with young people, the elder readers’ reading speed is slower, the number of fixation and regression is increased, and the fixation time is longer.Meanwhile, the elderly readers’ forward saccade length is shorter, and the researchers believe that they adopt a "relatively cautious" reading strategy. This strategy indicates that the control mechanism of eye movement of elderly readers is different from that of young people. Then, what factors influence the changes in the control mechanism of eye movement in elderly Chinese readers, and how?The purpose of this study is to investigate whether there is some differences between text features and individual features on the eye movement of young readers and elderly readers, and what factors influence the eye movement pattern of elderly readers. This study is based on the original data of previous eye movement studies. All subjects completed tasks such as vocabulary test and number span test, and reported the average reading time. Then, the Chinese sentence reading task was completed, and the eye tracking technique was used to record the eye movement during reading. This study used correlation analysis and hierarchical regression to examine the effects of text features such as word frequency, stroke number, word frequency and word length, and individual characteristics such as education level, reading habits, working memory and vocabulary ability on eye movement behaviors of elderly readers from three levels of character, word and sentence processing. The results at the character level show that stroke number can significantly affect the jump rate of the young group, but not the elderly. After controlling the word frequency variable, stroke number has a significant contribution to the jump rate of the two groups.Only the years of education can significantly affect the skipped reading rate of young subjects, but the phenomenon is not found in the old group. The results at the word level showed that word frequency, word length and complexity all affected the eye movement behavior of the two groups, while years of education and working memory significantly affected the total gaze time of the elderly. When years of education and daily reading time were controlled, working memory contributed significantly. At the sentence level,it is found that daily reading time and vocabulary ability have a significant impact on the forward saccade length of the elderly group, and the contribution is significant.Based on the above analysis results,(1)There are significant differences in the processing of words, words and sentences between the elderly and the young.Compared with the young, the processing time of the elderly is longer, the speed is slower, the skip reading rate is lower, and the backward looking ratio is higher. At the same time, vocabulary ability and working memory ability were also lower.(2)The contribution patterns of text-related attributes to the human eye movement behavior of the elderly and the young are different.Older people are more susceptible than younger people to low levels of effects such as word complexity and word length.(3)There are also differences in the contribution patterns of individual difference factors to the human eye movement behavior of the elderly and the young.Vocabulary ability and working memory were more important in older adults than in younger adults.
