| The source text of this report is an excerpt of the Finnish-American historian Max Dimont’s work: Jews,God and History. This book covers the Jewish historical structure, while integrating the Jewish experience and culture into the world civilization.Over the course of history, the Jewish people have faced numerous challenges, including losing their lands, making a living in alien lands, escaping from genocide, preserving their culture under different civilizations and making contributions to human civilization. The translator selects the second chapter of this book as translation materials. The source text is classified as an informative text.Hence,Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory is adopted as the main guiding theory, and semantic translation as the auxiliary guiding theory.Jewish cultural or other historical and cultural terms and culture-loaded words frequently appear in the source texts selected by the translator.Besides, there are some other difficult words as well. The difficulties on lexical level mainly adopt the method of annotation and conversion accordingly;there are still many long and difficult sentences in the source texts. For the translation of long difficult sentences, translation techniques such as division, restructuring and omission are adopted.Textual cohesion in translation is mainly carried out by means of reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction.During the translation process, the advisor’s opinions are taken into consideration.Relevant theoretical literature and books are consulted, and translation reports are written after the completion of the translation project.Difficulties and solutions in the translation process are analyzed further. Finally, the translator summarizes and reflects on the translation practice. |
